The Problems of Storytelling.
After viewing George Gerbner's The Electronic Storyteller in class, the consequences of our societies new method of storytelling have been weighed. Gerbner makes valid points in this film about the electronic revolution we've undergone and how it is problematic. Paying special attention to his argument on the images and ideas that our created about certain groups of people being misrepresented, I found an article on MTV's Jersey Shore, a new hit reality show, to prove Gerbner's argument true. After reading the article, Italian Americans and the 'G' word: Embrace or Reject? , what is your reaction? Do you think MTV is doing anything wrong or are people just being overly-sensitive?

If the word is offensive to Italians it should not be allowed on air. It's just like using the N word on air and I don't think we should allow it either. I believe even if some people find these words to be okay they are painful to others and shouldn't be publicized.
ReplyDeleteI think in general people of America have become too sensitive. We are all focused on what people have to say about us. Who cares what people have to say? If they don’t know who you are as a person, then why do their opinions matter? People everywhere on a daily basis use the N word for black and the F word for gays. The only time that there is such uproar is when it is on TV. The funny thing is that Jersey Shore was so popular that they are making another season. That only proves that it shouldn’t be that big of deal for people to say the G word for Italians. At least the people on the Jersey Shore are comfortable enough to go along with it. People just need to worry about themselves. If there is something on TV that you don’t like, change the channel and you won’t have to hear it. It is that simple.
ReplyDeleteI think that if these words have become disrespectful, MTV should not air it. We give the same respect for the N word and that word is not accepted nor welcomed in our society. When MTV casually throws around that word it is giving the public permission to use it freely too- because hey if MTV says it than its okay. I think it's ridiculous to allow the media especially MTV to pave the structure and morality of our society. Maybe if they focussed on things that would work towards benefiting our country and the problems in it than i would feel differently. I think we need to respect people and just not use that word if it is offensive!
